ON

Imik sat in her cabin and scanned the information about the planet below, her mind raced to clarify and identify any and all means to assist the Humans who survived on the surface. Her knowledge on Humans was limited, very limited. But radiation was a killer for most species, even her own. Somehow a thesis on nullifying the effects of nuclear radiation now appeared on the screen, it came from earths dark past a small country called Japan.

Two of its cities had experienced nuclear radiation when bombs had been used against them, thousands had died but still more lived with the results of radiation overdose sickness. Their treatments were basic but they worked for most Humans, A protein called granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, which promotes the growth of white blood cells, may counter the effect of radiation sickness on bone marrow. Treatment with this protein-based medicine, which includes filgrastim (Neupogen), sargramostim (Leukine) and pegfilgrastim (Neulasta), may increase white blood cell production and help prevent subsequent infections.

Maybe if she spoke to the Doctor about some of these old treatments it might assist those on the planet, treatment for internal contamination also figured highly. Several compounds seemed to aide in this. They included 1) Potassium iodide. This is a nonradioactive form of iodine. Iodine is essential for proper thyroid function. 2) Prussian blue (Radiogardase). This type of dye binds to particles of radioactive elements known as cesium and thallium. The radioactive particles then pass out of the body in feces. 3) Diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA). This substance binds to metals. DTPA binds to particles of the radioactive elements plutonium, americium and curium. The radioactive particles pass out of the body in urine.

She sat back and rubbed her head and neck, why was she an Ojnas doing this? Humans had caused this, and it was they who now suffered. But then she also remembered the Tholian attack on her own people, the biological bombs and the effect on the Ojnas. No, this sort of thing had to be prevented anyway she could manage. She would talk first to the Doctor and then to the Captain, maybe this old information could be of some limited use. Even if it only saved a handful of Humans, Imik knew she had done her best.
