As Luck Would Have It

901 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Cead Mile Failte
Location: USS Washington

Shran sat on the bridge of the Washington, very little for the Andorian to do at the moment. The ship was in close proximity to a stellar core fragment. Deanna had all her sensors scanning it, and multiple science departments were working around the clock as they got the opportunity to study something that didn't come around very often.

Shran walked over to see what Deanna seemed so thrilled about. "Care to enlighten the rest of us as to why you seem so cheerful?"

Deanna looked up. "I haven't had the opportunity to do any real scientific work in a while. Not since the planet we came across where the machines were trying to kill the humans. I got to do zoology at the back end of that little excursion. But this, this is letting me jump into multiple avenues of science all at once. I know it may not be what you get thrilled about, but this sort of thing is at the core of StarFleet. This sort of thing is why I originally joined StarFleet."

Shran nodded his understanding. "I know you have had to sacrifice certain things at times to do all that you do aboard this ship. That is true of many aboard honestly. Even if this may not be my idea of an exciting mission, I'm not blind to what this can mean for you, for the crew in general, and for StarFleet and the Federation." Shran looked at her sensor readouts. "It appears we are entering a star system, four planets." He looked over to L'Rissa who was at the CONN, "Anything navigational I need to be aware of?"

The Caitain female took a moment to look over her readouts on her controls. "Unless the sensors are giving us false information, it would appear this core fragment is going to collide with a planet in the system in about 76 hours."

"I assume that would destroy the planet" Shran replied. "What do we know about the planet and this system in general?"

"Officially this entire sector is unexplored sir. The system we are entering is designated Beta Delta 27. Scans indicate that the star in this system is nearly identical to that of Earth, a yellow dwarf. Four planets Three terrestrial worlds and one gas giant. The inner most planet is class G, reading excessive volcanic activity, the two middle planets are both Class M and both have a single moon, and the gas giant is the outer most planet currently on the far side of the system and is Class J, and reading multiple moons in orbit of it, at least a dozen, several of which several are class L or class M as well" L'Rissa replied.

Shran looked back at Deanna, "Have you scanned these worlds yet Deanna? I would hope we would determine if they were inhabited, especially considering that one of them is about to get plastered by this stellar core fragment."

"In my excitement I allowed myself to get bogged down and didn't look at the system we were entering." Deanna replied as she began working furious at her station.

"It does appear that the planet that is to be impacted has life on it..." Deanna began before trailing off.

"Spit it out Deanna" Shran said after she got very quiet.

"They are human. Reading a population of over 3 million" Deann said in shocked horror at the discovery.

"Humans, here? But this is an unexplored sector of space. Why would there be humans out here?" Shran questioned rhetorically. "3 million people..." Shran began. "L'Rissa, get us to that planet. We need to talk to somebody down there, find out who they are, and perhaps more."

The Washington rushed off and quickly found itself in orbit of the class M world in the path of the stellar core fragment. "Scan the planet again. Are we detecting any signs of advanced technology?"

"We are being hailed" Deanna noted.

"On screen."

The viewscreen came to life. A beautiful redheaded female appeared on the screen. "Cead mile failte. I welcome you to our world, Tuatha."

Considering at least some of her words were in English, Shran had no choice to make an inquiry. "Greetings. We are reading a great host of humans down there. Might you tell us how you managed to find yourself on this planet?"

"Personally, I was born here" the woman replied. "We were all born here."

"I see. My apologies, we are just surprised to find humans here. Are you aware of the situation?" Shran replied.

"If you mean that large rock headed this way, we know. We aren't concerned" the woman replied.

"You should be" Deanna spoke up. "It is a stellar core fragment. Your planet should already be feeling affects, and things will get worse the closer it gets."

"I am happy to come aboard to discuss this matter with you if you like" the woman replied. "I assume you have some sort of matter transporting device?"

Shran looked at Deanna quizzically before looking back at the viewscreen. "Yes. We can transport you up if you would like. "Yes, we can do that."

"Very well. Allow me to gather my entourage and we will signal you again when we are prepared" the woman said before quickly turning the viewscreen off.

"Deanna, get Jon up here. And based on that accent of hers, I think we may need Lt O'Connor as well."
