Mission:
Holding Pattern Hijinks
Location: Sickbay
Lt Sakonna had only been aboard the ship for a day now. She had met with her senior officer, Dr. Samantha Howard and learned in that conversation that things went beyond standard procedure aboard this ship, something she was adaptable to learning about. And so it was on her first duty shift, running sickbay with Dr. Del Rio as her overseer that she had to treat her first patient.
Deanna had called in ahead of time to prepare medical for the patient. It was actually more than one in reality, but Viviana was looking forward to it. She knew Samantha would want to know if Sakonna could handle anything thrown at her, so she told her of the incoming patients, but not who they were or what to expect, only that Cmdr Celes was bringing them in. It was quite the surprise for Sakonna when she discovered that her patients were a pair of animals she had never encountered before that the commander considered pets.
Sakonna arched an eyebrow. "I was under the impression you had a medical emergency."
Deanna looked at Sakonna. "You are a doctor, correct? They got into a tussle and were injured."
Sakonna saw Viviana watching her. This was obviously some sort of test. Dr. Howard did say they did things a little differently aboard this ship. "Very well. I am unfamiliar with these creatures. What species are they?"
"These are creatures discovered on a mission we had about six months ago. I originally collected them for zoological purposes, but after studying them, I decided to keep them as pets. They are generally quite personable, and they possess remarkable psionic ability" Deanna responded. "The bird is called a rowlet on its homeworld, but it is just a specialized type of owl that I named Hoot, and the other is known as an electromouse that I named Pika."
Sakonna scanned them with her tricorder, taking in medical data for the first time, or at least the first time for her. The rowlet creatures appeared like it was deeply stunned and she reached down to touch its large feathers along its wings and then she pulled her hand back after the feather was found to be razor sharp, leaving her finger lacerated and green blood dripping onto the biobed.
Viviana quickly approached with a dermal regenerator. "I see you are a little out of practice with your veterinary medicine."
Sakonna looked to the human female, "I have not treated a nonhumanoid patient in nearly a decade. I must admit, I had forgotten that pets might be aboard a starship."
Completing her simple first aid, "Well, the patients are still in need of care. Can you manage it, or would you like for me to take over?"
"I am more than capable of rendering basic medical care" Sakonna replied, the sound of irritation in her voice.
Viviana looked to Deanna, both of them taking note of the small emotional outburst by the Vulcan.
Sakonna continued to treat the animals, completing her treatment of Hoot before moving on to the second creature, which equally looked dazed, but showed several contusions and small lacerations. Not seeing any reason to be concerned, she took the dermal regenerator from Viviana and began treating the injuries. She was surprised, as were everyone else, when as she got close to one of the red dots on its face an electrical bolt rang out and fried the dermal regenerator.
"Fascinating" Sakonna noted dropping the tool a half second before it was fried, avoiding being electrocuted. She looked at the device sizzling on the floor. "It would seem this creature has the ability to release a powerful electrical charge. Electromouse indeed."
"That is my fault. I should've warned you about that" Deanna noted.
"It would've been appreciated. But as the humans say, no harm, no foul" Sakonna replied. "I'll complete treatment, and you can take the creatures away." Getting a new dermal regenerator, she completed the treatment, repairing the damage to Pika.
"Thank you for your assistance in this matter" Deanna noted as she gathered up the two creatures and then left.
"Not bad for your first patients. Beat the madness I had to deal with" Viviana noted. "You'll get used to things soon enough."
