Not So Sweet a Goodbye

Mission: A Dark Looking Glass
Location: DS9 Medbay
Timeline: Current

Jon was alone with Essie. It would be the last time for what was sure to be a long recovery. Essie was going back to Earth. She was in her stasis pod and she looked so peaceful lying there. The engagement ring Jon had given her on her finger. Jon's hand rested on the pod, his head bent down touching it. Tears streamed down his face as he talked to Essie. " You're going back to Earth sweetie. The doctors there will take good care of you. They are going to send me regular updates so I know how you're doing." He paused as a sob racked his body. " Essie, this so damn hard. I don't want you to leave but it's for your own good, to help you get better. Once you are, I'll come back to Earth for you and we'll get married."

The tears flowed even more. "Bashir says the best medical minds are looking at treatment for you. So you just concentrate on getting better." His head moved up to hers. "I wish I could go back with you but I'm needed here." Suddenly he exploded. "This is so damn unfair! I should be lying there not you. You're a counselor for god's sake!" He turned and slumped to the base of the pod as he cried and sobbed. "You're my best friend, my lover, my confidant, my better half Essie! I don't know what I'm going to do without you keeping me straight. Who am I going to tell my jokes to or cook for? Better yet who is going to like my cooking?"

He took a deep breath, "I'm going to miss out nights together, where we just sat together never saying a word. Just enjoying each other's company. Or the time we went skinny dipping at Lake Arrowhead? The water was so damn cold! I think we were both blue when we got out. Then we lay together by the fire to get warm." He sniffled and stood back up. As memories of their happier times together threatened to overwhelm him. "You are the best thing in my life Essie." He took a breath and continued. "Sam's already planning a party for when you come back and I know the Captain is looking forward to having more conversations with you. Deanna and Ayana can't wait to go shopping with you." His tears flowed like twin rivers. "So a lot of people are rooting for you my darling and I know you won't disappoint them."

He saw some medical personnel walking towards him and knew it was time for Essie to be on her way. "Sweetie, it's almost time for you to go but I want to play your favorite song for you, so you know just how I feel, how I will always feel along with how much I love you."

He pulled out an old beat up tape player and hit play. Soon the Medbay was filled with music.

"I love you Essie Stratton. Now and until the end of time." He whispered as he bent forward and kissed the pod, right where her lips were.
