Infusion

Posted on Sat Jan 29th, 2022 @ 6:25pm by Lieutenant Commander Callie Raven-Grayson & Lieutenant Commander Shoniara T’ghann-Travis Dr

Mission: Respite
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: Shoreleave Day 6 9am

After a restful night’s sleep Callie made her way to Sickbay for her arranged appointment with Dex. She and Jon had agreed to the course of treatment, side effects or not Callie was willing to do it.

“Morning Shon” Callie offered a smile as she walked into Sickbay.

Shon looked up from her preparation of Callie’s infusion. “Good morning to you, how was your night, I hope you remembered what we discussed about lovemaking?” She smiled. “I know how hard it is.”

“We remembered Shon, no lovemaking for the first trimester.” She offered a smile. “There are...other ways to enjoy ourselves.” She grinned. “We talked after you left, we still want to go through with this, anything to give our baby the best chance. I can’t go through losing another Shon, it would shatter me.”

“Okay everything is ready, I’ll have you lie down for the first one just in case you have a reaction. It might be a little itchy at the infusion site for the first few times but it should settle. I can give you some cream if it gets bad.”

Callie nodded. “How bad will the side effects be? I want to be able to work, I’ll go stir crazy if I have to sit around.”

“They can all be worked around, it should not preclude you from your counselling duties. When you are in your office you will need to be putting your feet up, obviously not on the Bridge though.” Shon giggled “could you imagine asking the Captain for footstool!”

He’d have me tossed off the bridge!” Callie grinned. “The beauty of being a Counsellor is that I can sit down and do my work.”

She commenced the infusion and checked Callie’s vitals, her blood pressure was up slightly but for the moment Dex put it down to her excitement. “Any headaches, itches, leg pains?”

Callie shook her head. “Not yet, but I am feeling a little dizzy. I don’t know if that’s usual with this or not.”

“It can be, but only when the infusion is running and you have two minutes to go before it ends. Just lie still and try to relax.”

Callie took a deep breath, it didn’t help that she felt like the room was spinning. “Will this...happen every time I have one of these infusions?”

“Probably yes, but here.” she produced a hypo and depressed it into her carotid artery. “This should help almost immediately and the infusion is over in a few seconds now.”

Callie took a deep breath grateful when the hypo kicked in. “That is...better, thank you Shon.” She offered a smile. “If it helps the baby I’m willing to do whatever it takes.”

The infusion finished she noted it on her device and checked the delivery site on her forearm. “It is a little red so let me know if it gets worse I can give you an anti itch cream for it. From now on I would rather you had as few medications as possible, and…… that is it. Told you it would not take long. You can get up now.”

Callie took a moment before slowly sitting up, the dizziness had finally worn off but now she was sitting up it was replaced with a headache. “About the headaches, you were right.” She massaged her temples. “Dizziness gone, headache arrived.” She offered a brief smile.

“I am sorry Callie, I can give you another hypo but I would rather not. Try plenty of fluids for the next couple of hours but no tea or coffee. If it has not gone by then call me okay. If this continues then we may have to think of something other than the infusion. As I explained it is a rather new treatment. Go curl up with Jon and have him massage your temples like this.” She stood behind Callie and placed her fingers on the dermatome lines that conducted stress and pain. “Right here and have him massage vertically, like this, or, you can do it yourself if need be.” She massaged for a couple of minutes, “any help my friend?”

“A little” Callie nodded. “Don’t worry I’ll cope, it’s not a bad headache.” She smiled as she stood ready to leave. “Thank you for this Shon, I appreciate everything you’re doing for us.”

“No problem Callie, do you want me to walk you back to your quarters?”

“The company would be appreciated” Callie nodded. “Actually I have something I’d like to ask you.”

“I would love to my friend.” They walked out of sickbay companionably along the corridor.

Callie looked towards Shon as they walked. “I was wondering...would you consider being our baby’s godmother? It’s more an Earth tradition than a Betazoid one but I think Jon would approve.”

Shon stopped, it was all she could do not to cry. She turned Callie towards her and gathered her into a huge hug. “Callie I would be honoured and extremely happy.” She put her hand gently on Callie’s abdomen, “Come on and grow little one, I want to meet my God daughter, or God son.” They carried on walking and entered the turbolift.

Callie stepped inside and turned to look at her friend. “Shon do you think the Captain was right? Were Jon & I reckless trying for a baby? I didn’t think it would happen so soon especially after surgery.”

“Halt turbolift Dex A12” the turbolift stopped. “No Callie I do not think you were reckless, you both nearly died and emotions ran high, and I expect they still will be. I can understand the Captain wants his Chief Counsellor and his XO fit and working, Surak he wants his whole crew that way but life is not always what we want. He will work round it, that is why he is the Captain and a darn good one at that. You could not know this wonderful thing, making this new life would happen.” She hugged Callie again. “Resume turbolift.”

Callie returned her friend’s hug. “Thank you Shon.” She stifled a yawn. “Well I know where I’m going when I get home, straight to bed for a nap while I have the time.”

“Good idea Callie, next time you must listen to my news.” The lift door opened and they strolled to Callie’s quarters. “Well I will see you tomorrow unless you have any problems before then.” She bent and kissed her friend on the cheek. “Nap well.” She said and strolled off.

Callie smiled before turning and heading inside. Making for the bedroom she walked inside the door swishing closed behind her.
