657 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: Cead Mile Failte
Location: USS Washington - Sickbay

Shran had made his way down to sickbay to speak with Sam. The two were in her office while her staff tended to the two minor incidents that had brought in patients.

Shran was speaking with Sam, "Based on everything I have seen, they are definitely human, Irish decent. They have an even thicker accent than Lt O'Connor, if that is possible. They seem to live in a Medieval level of technology from what we've seen thus far, wearing handmade clothing, wool and linen from what I could tell, and they care short swords. In some respect it was like meeting with Klingons, but more pleasant. They may be a matriarchal society if the representatives that came aboard are any indication. I'm keeping the away team small as they requested, and more on the scientific side for now, and nearly everyone will be female on the chance they are a matriarchy."

"Intriguing" Sam replied, genuinely interested in how a culture such as the Irish could be found in this region of the galaxy and in such a pure form. Wait...you said they were matriarchal? Is that a true Irish thing or could be unique to this population?"

Shran looked perplexed for a moment. "My knowledge of human cultures and history is limited to what I learned at the Academy, but as I recall the ancient Irish had kings, but the females were considered equals in many respects and even could rise to ranks of queen. Not quite a matriarchy, but not a patriarchal society either."

"Yet this one seems matriarchal. Do you have any other information that may be useful? They are obviously warp capable or we wouldn't be having this discussion" Sam smirked and reached foe the coffee sitting beside her. It was lukewarm which wasn't uncommon these days.

"We don't know that for certain doctor. We know they are human, so the Prime Directive isn't exactly to be enforced. I'll say this, I got no hostile intent from them" Shran replied.

Just then Jon came in. Shran looked back, "I assume our guests got back without issue."

"Yes sir, no issue at all. In fact, they are looking forward to your visit." Jon replied as he slid into a chair. "Hiya Sam." He greeted the CMO with a smile.

"I am looking forward to seeing this planet as well. Anything of note that you observed that I need to know about?" Shran questioned.

"They made mention of the fairy folk and druids. They also said the high king would probably meet and talk with you. Oh, one other item sir, Mr. O'Connor asked about if they had leprechauns and based on Maeve's answer, I think you are all in for a treat sir." Jon finished with a grin.

"Fairy folk, druids, leprechauns..." Shran replied stoically, continuing, "we are going to encounter every mythological and historical figure in Earth's history before my time as captain is over. Hopefully Mr O'Connor can give us needed insight into the tales of his homeland." He looked back at Sam, "Don't you start with those Chesire grins and laughing under your breath. Just remember, you are going down there as well." He looked at Jon, "I see that smile and I heard that amusement in your voice. You are just as bad as Sam. I'm headed for the transporter room. You go mind the bridge. Make sure you keep a close eye on that core fragment." With that the Andorian stomped out in a huff.

"Aye, aye my captain and sure and begorrah maybe you'll find a pot of gold." Jon called cheerfully after him.

"Leprechauns...my ass" Sam snorted as she contemplated the fairy tales of old. Such things didn't exist and were based on flights of fancy from thousands of years ago. Weren't they?

"Now Sam, keep an open mind." Jon bantered with the CMO "Play your cards right and you may even see some fairy folk."
