Captain's Log
Begin recording...
The Washington is finally done with repairs and refits and is once again in open space. I must admit that I feel a bit as I did as a newly commissioned ensign on my first deep space assignment. It has been longer than I might have liked, but thankfully we managed to keep the core of the crew together. Many of the junior officers have been rotated out, hopefully moving on to other fruitful assignments.
Jon seems to be back in high spirits once more. Thankfully he and the counselor took a short 2 week leave together a few weeks back and his upon his return he seemed like a new man. Amazing the effect a female has on a male given the opportunity. While I don't know the extent of their relationship, the friendship part seems to be quite strong, something quite important in human relationships should romance be sought. I am happy for them both.
Doctor Howard informed me in a mixed manner as usual about Command sending her a completely new staff, minus her head nurse. Looking over the orders it seems most of them are coming straight out of the academy. Apparently Samantha is expected to play professor on top of her other duties. I doubt she would have taken the bridge officers exam if she knew this would be one of the results.
Sachzny has returned to the ship after spending time with her family and her people on their resettled homeworld. The Tholian affair was quite difficult, even more so for her than any of us. I suspect it had consequences that she will never openly divulge, but she is a proud woman from a proud race and I won't pry into things that I shouldn't. Once I knew she was returning I had a long talk with Jon, trying to move her into a position that best suited her. Jon's suggestion was almost Vulcan in its absolute logical precision. I think Sachzny as Chief Tactical Officer may be the best place for her. She rivals any Andorian in tactical ability and her experience serving in the military for her own people gives her superior analytical skills when it comes to strategy. I look forward to putting her to use when and if tactical scenarios arise.
Our mission now sends us on what should be a simple, I believe the humans call it a cake run. Checking on colony worlds and stations on the frontier, and if sensors so indicate the opportunity to explore uncharted space. I don't expect much in the realm of action, mostly routine events, perhaps a little headache or two when dealing with colony leaders. We shall see of course.
End Log.
