A Surprise for Kate

Ben crept into the quarters he and Kate shared carrying a small bundle. It was a dog, a Siberian husky to be specific. Twelve weeks old. He knew Kate had grown attached to a dog she had 'adopted; when on the Wild West planet and how upset she had been when the dog died even though she his it well. He hoped this dog would ease her pain. He put the dog down on the carpet and spoke to it. "This is your new home boy and soon you'll meet Kate and I know you will love her as much as I do." Bright blue eyes stared back at him and a soft yelp of agreement was heard. "We just need to come up with a fitting name for you. We'll let Kate give her opinion as well."

Ben patted the pup between the ears and scratched under its chin. "Yes, I do believe Kate is going to love you." He whispered as he waited for her to return. As he waited he reflected on how he kept Kate from finding out about the dog, stashing it in Sickbay where the medical staff made sure the dog remained unseen. The dog had all its shots and vaccines, was more or less house broken and smart as a whip learning quickly to sit, stay, speak.

Ben looked at the chrono on the wall and saw Kate would be home soon from her workout class. He couldn't wait to see the look on her face at seeing the new addition to the family.
