A Routine Day?

Posted on Mon May 11th, 2020 @ 9:31pm by Commander Samantha Howard

Mission: Unto Darkness, Light
Location: Sickbay

“ The time is 0500 hours” The emotionless voice of the computer intoned. “The time is 0500 hours”

Sam groaned she wakefulness flirted with her happily unconscious mind, her eyelids flickering as the computer increased the illumination of her quarters by 10% every 30 seconds as per her standard instructions. She debated whether to hit the proverbial ‘snooze’ button and grab a few more minutes of precious sleep, her dreams had been disturbing and left her feeling less than rested. Today wasn’t overly important – they were now on a survey mission, heading towards Bellum III. Pretty standard stuff by Starfleet standard, but due to the fact they were now operating outside the Federations jurisdiction there would now be an element of uncertainty.

“ Get UP” Sam told herself, throwing the standard grey coverlet down from her body and letting the coolness of the environmental systems wake her even further. She’d always slept better when the air was a little cooler and it had become a habit to set her quarters to around 18 degrees for her sleeping periods.

A visit to the bathroom, fresh uniform and a cup of coffee left Howard feeling a little more like a functional person – the caffeine jump starting her system and waking up her sluggish mind. A simple breakfast of beans and toast gave her metabolism it’s morning requirements and enough energy to get through the first few hours of what would hopefully be a fairly routine day. Her shift started in 10 minutes, causing Sam to hustle out the door and head towards sickbay.

“ Morning All” The CMO said brightly as she entered sickbay, greeting her staff with a smile that hopefully was as bright as the tone in her voice. The usual greetings were offered in return, causing Sam to smile. She did love her work, she loved her team and their dedication to their duties.

Heading into her office she sat and reviewed the night shift’s reports, perusing the patient treatments, routine maintenance and stocktaking the team had undertaken. Today Sam hoped to catch up on some reading detailing a new trial treatment for peripheral vascular degeneration as well as some training with her team. Settling down with a fresh cup of coffee – she began her day and hoped for the best.
