Surgery

Mission: The Borg Encounter
Location: Sickbay - main surgical suite

Dr Samantha Howard drew in a deep calming breath as she entered sickbay, having handed command of the Washington back to the ships rightful Captain. Shran seemed unaffected by his brief stint on the Borg vessel and had been cleared for duty by Dr Perrin.

Sam regarded her team as they prepared Jon for surgery, working quickly and calmly despise the Borg in their midst.

"Suite 1 is prepared and ready Doctor, we've disabled all cortical implants and transmitters." Dr Perrin informed as Sam headed into her office to change. A moment later she reappeared in red scrubs, hair neatly tucked under a surgical cap and a serious expression on her face.

"Let's get him back" she said simply, mentally preparing for what she and her team were about to do. The Borg had done an incredible amount of damage to Jon's body in their efforts to achieve Borg perfection. Implants had been added, limbs mutilated, and organs interfered with.

"Activate life support, all systems" Sam started, picking up the laser scalpel on the sterile tray to her right. First they would remove all the implants, then they would focus on repairing what was left.

"Life support nominal, all systems nominal" the head surgical nurse announced, ready to assist in any way.

The next four hours were a blur of scan, incision, removal, cauterize and regenerate. It was painstaking work and tested every iota of Sam's skill and knowledge. She had never performed a surgery such as this before.

Another two hours later she stood straight and rolled her aching shoulders, grimacing at the stiffness that resided between her shoulder blades. The last implant had been removed and now sat innocently on a surgical tray for later analysis. The repair work seemed to be holding - a good sign for such a delicate and intricate operation. Keeping Job sedated for the next few hours would allow his body to rest and start it's own repairs. It would also give his mind some time to process things before he woke up. Essie was going to have her work cut out for her.

" Remove life support" Sam ordered, carefully watching the large display on the wall that shows Jon's vital signs. As the life support systems were disconnected there was a few moments of variation which was to be expected. Surgery was a trauma to the body despite the intentions of doing good. It would take a while before he was 100% back to normal.

Dr Perrim regarded Sam with a raised eyebrow.
" You need some sleep"

" You got that right, I'm wrecked" Sam admitted, unable to stifle the yawn that forced its way through her self control. Perrim nodded towards the door and prepared Jon to be moved back to the main sickbay ward to continue his recovery.

Sam's feet were heavy as she headed for her office to make the necessary notes and inform Essie and the Captain that Jon's condition was stable and he was recovering well. Less than 5 minutes later she was asleep at her desk, padd still in hand.
