Not so Physical Wounds

1,007 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Genetic Purity
Location: Sickbay

Inara sat on a biobed in sickbay as medical personnel scanned her. "Amazing, I was beamed down, just so we could be betrayed on a 'diplomatic visit' to Neues Deutschland. Now I'm still being scanned like I'm someone's screwed over science experiment. I'm not injured, Goebbels did not get around to torturing me physically, mentally however...."

"I don't find anything wrong with her physically" Tarja noted as she closed her tricorder, speaking with Sam and Viviana who were still working on others at the moment. "She is saying she was damaged mentally, perhaps in the same manner as Lt Cmdr Grayson."

"Oh, you have no idea how fucked up everything is upstairs in my head, I've fought a war, I've been mind-screwed by gods, and now I've been knocked around and mind wormed by a neo-Nazi bitch. Now I have less sanity than a few days ago." Inara got up and walked over to Kate. "I'm sorry... Kate, for what it's worth, I put a disruptor bolt in his head."

"I think this one has really lost it. May need a full psych workup" Tarja said.

"Actually, this is Inara on a good day" Ayana joked, sitting on a biobed herself. "Somehow Inara, I don't think Sam needs you in the way while she works on Kate. Perhaps you ought to let Tarja do her job. You might get out of here a bit sooner."

"I think the best thing for you might be a dose of synaptizine. Help clear your mind a bit. We might also see about Vulcan neuro pressure. That tends to alleviate the sort of things you are describing" Tarja insisted.

Sam overheard the conversation and popped over, casting an eye over the medical reports.

"I see they've done a number of you as well" she mused to Inara as she gave the officer the once over. "I can recommend some neural workups, a series of psychological counselling, and a good night's sleep."

"Doctor, no offense. If that worked on me, I'd be in love with Red Squad, marrying Deanna, destroying sleeper ships because of regulations, gleefully running towards any temporal anomaly for reasons, and actually worshiping gods instead of science." Inara mentioned. "Fortunately for me, that is not the case, but sure; have it your way. Not like it's going to work on a woman as messed up as me, as I view psychology as a rather elementary philosophy" She looked at Tarja. "Is your minion done scanning me? I have to see how worried sick Jas is, or if she's just taking this in stride."

"Sorry, you aren't my type" Deanna quipped as she entered sickbay. "Not sure you should be worshipping anyone or anything, but if you feel that you must, I suppose science isn't the worst option. I would suggest you try to get more comfortable with regulations though." She looked to Sam, "Just down here to check on everyone for the captain. He is talking with Jon and should be bringing him down shortly."

"Anyway Deanna, that Bunker down there. That place is filled with very awful genetically enhanced monsters. Crater it. I've already made Doctor Bismarck regret what he did to Kate. And don't ask for details on how I escaped. Let's just say these nazi wannabes were impressionable."

"The bunker I assume is where Cmdr Grayson was being held. Whoever was in there with him is dead. The rest of the colony, well, the captain has wide latitude in the matter" Deanna replied. "In fact, I have things I need to do once I get an update here. Maybe I'll go massacre the colony. That would be in line with what you think we would do, isn't it?"

Sam approached Inara with a loaded hypospray. "This will help I think" she said simply as she noted the previous adverse comments regarding CBT therapy. "Hang on, you're saying there's genetically modified creatures down there? That goes against a hundred different regulations."

"You are talking about human genetic modifications? That isn't allowed under Federation law. You have to have special permission to alter human genetics. Humans can't avoid the Augment issues. Certain species in the Federation are allowed of course. How crazy is that colony?" Viviana questioned.

"Crazy? And you think that these people consider themselves under Federation law? That is simultaneously naive and adorable. Don't think for a moment that they'll just do what the Federation wants them to do, as they came out here originally cast out as pariahs on Earth. What you should be asking is what do we do next? Are we going to pass mandates and restrictions on their existence? If I were the Federation Council, I would consider very carefully history before we repeat history and put these people under the Prime Directive. Step aside, and do not interfere with them until they've learned from their mistakes. That to me sounds like the best course of action. But I am not the Federation Council, and it's full of ideological fools. Politicians never rely on the expertise or logic of people who understand, only their own research assistants and what will get them re-elected, and they'll want to ensure a threat is contained, pacified, controlled, and the question is, how far is containment when it comes to things their morals abhor." Inara stood from the biobed. "Ponder that ladies, I'm going to get a bottle of wine. There's things I want out of my head."

Deanna looked to Ayana and the others as Inara exited sickbay, "I suppose we shouldn't tell her that the captain has already made a decision on these people based on orders and we aren't destroying the colony but instead quarantining it."

"You could try" Sam admitted quietly, not used to being rebutted in her own workspace. "I fear she will unravel without professional help, but she needs to be willing to receive it" they watched Inara stalk out of sickbay.

"Well, with all of that, can I go?" Ayana questioned.

"Sorry lieutenant. Yes, you are cleared" Viviana replied.
