Mission:
Sinister Intentions
Location: USS Washington
The away team materialized in the middle of sickbay. Ayana looked almost annoyed that they had left the fight unsettled. Eislyn on the other hand looked quite grateful to be back on the ship as Samantha hovered over her, Jon nearby with his phaser still drawn. The sudden appearance of the away team in sickbay though seemed to startle several of the patients, and the women, many of which were teenagers and early twenty-somethings began to panic.
After her momentary shock when the away team beamed in Dex moved over to Sam, Eislyn had obviously been injured in what seemed to have been a firefight.
‘Do you need my help?” She asked.
Sam ran the tricorder over Eislyn's shoulder and began a more thorough treatment regime. " I think I've got this, what I need you to do though is keep every else in here as calm as possible" She looked around sickbay at the agitated patients that were still being treated.
Dex turned to Jon, “Please Commander can you put the phaser away, it is not helping our friends.” She nodded towards the frightened patients. “Unless we are expecting guests?”
Jon turned to see Dex standing there, "Yes of course Doctor." He replied holstering his phaser. His eyes searched for Callie but he didn't see her.
Dex moved over to the group of frightened women and girls huddled in the corner. Some were crying, others were praying. She knelt by them, then sat gently talking in Vulcan, her voice slowly softened and her pitch became the same, they listened and as they did the sobs became less and the prayers began to dissipate. She looked at each of them and promised them they would be safe here. They began to talk together, quietly about what had just happened to then. Dex stood and smiled.
Back in the main surgical bay Sam worked on repairing the damage to Eislyn's shoulder. A minor surgical procedure was required to repair the deep tissue damage and reattach one of the ligaments.
" I need to put you under for a few minutes, 20 at most" She pressed a hand to Eislyn's good shoulder.
"By all means doctor" Eislyn replied.
Pressing a hypo to Eislyn's carotid artery Sam prepped her for surgery and began repairing the damaged tendons.
“Ayana are you hurt?” Dex asked, the woman was standing looking at the rest of the away team, she seemed angry.
"Only my pride doctor" replied Ayana as she holstered her phaser. "We got ambushed."
“Is there anything I can do to help?” Callie looked across from where she sat on her biobed. “I’m here so I might as well make myself useful.”
Then Jon saw and heard Callie. He rushed to her side. "Callie!" He exclaimed, "Are you alright? I heard you collapsed."
Callie smiled the biggest smile yet seeing Jon. “I’m okay Jon, Dex has seen fit to place a tracker in me in case I go walkabout though.” She grinned. “Seriously though, I feel fine.”
Jon heaved a relieved sigh and sat down next to Callie. "Are you sure Callie? I heard you collapsed." He offered and then grinning continued, "I think Dex is showing remarkable medical good sense."
Callie smiled. “Ohh, I bet you do. I’d like to get back to work, but I don’t think I’m allowed just yet.”
Shon came over to Callie and ran a bio scan. “How are you feeling Callie?” She asked.
“I feel fine” Callie smiled. “No lingering effects at all.”
Jon waited until Dex had completed the bio scan. "How is Callie Doctor? Why did she collapse? Does she need to stay in Sickbay?" He asked in rapid succession.
"Callie is fine, she had a seizure following interaction with the women of the group. I stopped the seizure and completed a bio scan of her brain which showed there was what seemed like some kind of ‘instruction’ that was hidden deep in their brains that was transferred into Callie’s. Her neural scan was certainly abnormal at the time of the seizure but it has gone now. As far as medical is concerned no, she need not stay in sickbay but the Captain ordered everyone to stay here and provided a happy little security contingent to spend a joyous time with us” she said rather sarcastically.
"Instruction?" Jon repeated. "Any idea what this instruction consisted of?" He sighed, "Well if everyone has to stay in Sickbay, then I'm going to relax, move over Callie, I'm going to lie down." He joked.
“No idea I am afraid, it was there and then gone. Now if I could get an actual brain to study..” she looked at Callie and smiled. “I am not asking you to donate yours.” She patted her hand. “Now, any more questions? If not help yourself to the replicator in the office, we are still waiting for refreshment for our guests.”
"Thanks Doc, though for now, I think I'll just sit here with Callie and keep her company and out of trouble." Jon replied with a grin at Callie.
Dex smiled, “yes, thank you Commander, Callie is always trouble.” She winked at her and returned to her patients.
"Not telling me anything I don't already know Doc." Jon bantered and chuckled at their word play. Looping an arm around Callie.
Callie grinned. “Thanks a lot Jon!” She lay her head on his shoulder. “How’s about we go to the office and get something to eat? I’m starving!”
"Sounds like a winning plan to me Callie." Jon answered with a smile, rising from the bed and taking Callie's hand to help her up and off the biobed.
Walking with Jon, Callie looked back. “Shon has been trying to keep me away from these women, mainly due to what happened to me. I was helping the children instead. They all need help Jon, I can’t just limit myself to a small few.” She sighed. “Anyway let’s eat, I’m hungry enough to eat a whole targ!”
As they walked, Jon listened to what Callie said then he answered. "Callie, your dedication to wanting to help people is wonderful and commendable but the Doc is doing what she thinks is best. "She doesn't want you to stress yourself and lets be honest here, you would throw yourself into helping everyone you could and you would collapse again." Jon answered.
Callie nodded. “That’s true I would.” As they reached the office she walked over to the replicator to choose herself a meal, returning a few moments later with a plate of chicken & chips and a cola. She placed the tray down on the office desk and looked at Jon. “Can I get you something?”
"A vanilla milkshake please Callie." Jon replied as he plopped one of her chips into his mouth, "Hmm. not bad, not bad at all." He commented.
Callie grinned and replicated a bowl of chips as well as a milkshake. “Here you go” She returned with both popping them down on the table. “Thought you’d like some chips as well.”
Ayana walked over to the replicator, a look of annoyance about her. "Sorry I didn't see those others hiding in the alley commander. I blame myself for the ambush."
"Well I don't. So stop being so hard on yourself Ayana. We're all okay. Furthermore we knew we were being shadowed but none of us thought we would be attacked.
"I appreciate that commander" she replied. She turned to the replicator, "Boneless honey barbeque wings, Southern style potato salad, and a glass of rootbeer." The replicator beeped and the order materialized. Ayana took the food and sat it on the desk and began enjoying the comfort food.
Callie tucked into her food as well. "If you need to talk at any point Ayana, my door is always open."
Jon ignored his chips and kept taking Callie's.
"I appreciate that counselor" replied Ayana.
Dex became busy helping the women to something hot to drink with the promise of a hot meal, a shower and some decent clothing when the Captain let them. She went over to Sam who was finishing Eislyn's surgery. “Everything go well?” She asked.
" Just about done" Sam replied as she chased the detached bicep muscle and reattached it to its insertion point. The internal damage had been worse than she had first though, the blast having not only scorched the superfictial layers of skin and muscle, but had torn apart the internal structures, causing a full shoulder reconstruction. It wasn't quite going to the 20 minutes she had promised.
Shran entered sickbay and looked around, spotting Jon in the office with Ayana and Callie. He walked over, "What happened down there Jon?"
"We met with a Lt. Commander T'vall who I am convinced knows more then he is letting on sir. He was very tight lipped about the magnitude of the disappearances and gave very weak excuses on why more hasn't been done to find and stop the disappearances." Jon took a breath, "We left to look around on our own and were down at the docking bridge when were attacked by unknown assailants sir."
Callie sat listening as Jon talked to Shran, taking a sip of her cola as they discussed what had occurred.
"Everything at this colony is wrong, right down to the StarFleet personnel. After speaking with Ayana while you were on the surface I had Deanna pull this T'Vall's service record. He has a fairly spotless record, though it isn't overly filled with accomplishments. He seems to be close to a few in command which explains his rise in the ranks, but his career is rather unremarkable. Many of the senior officers on this ship have two or three times the career merits. One thing I did notice is that he was a classmate of Callie's. That might give us some leverage over him. I'd like to speak with him as soon as possible. Bring him up Jon and escort him to the conference room. I'd like you, Callie, and Ayana present when I speak with him."
“T’Vall...” Callie paused to think. “Yes...now I remember him. Somewhat of a-typical Vulcan male! It’ll be nice to see him again.”
"I don't know about that Callie. I and the others got the impression he was hiding something." Jon replied. He over to Shran, "Sir is this a good idea? Putting T'vall in the same room as Callie?"
Dex came in just in time to hear Jon’s conversation and she volunteered her observations. “Most Vulcans appear to be hiding something, it is a process of us not allowing telepaths or others to invade our minds and allow us some privacy, It is something we are taught from childhood.” She helped herself to an Earl Grey tea.
"Not to worry. Security is here to watch and assist with these patients. Now, let's get some answers from this T'Vall."
“Captain would it be possible for me to observe his interactions whilst he is here ? I may be able to gain some insight that might be helpful.” Dex asked.
"I suppose that could be helpful doctor. He may feel a bit overwhelmed with so many in the room with him, but making him uncomfortable is my goal."
Callie looked towards Shran. “I’m willing to take whatever precautions are necessary Captain, from what I remember of T’Vall he was a nice enough individual, but it’s been a few years since I last saw him.”
"We'll take precautions, but I think it important for you to be there counselor. You will be the only friendly face he'll see. I suspect he'll be guarded, perhaps even more so than the typical Vulcan." The Andorian looked to Jon, "I'd like you and Ayana to pick him up. Considering you were just attacked on the surface, I think it prudent to be cautious when you go down."
“I’d like to volunteer to go along to meet T’Vall Sir” Callie offered a smile. “Like you said I’m the friendly face that’ll make him more at ease. Though I’m sure he’d say to feel uneasy is impossible for a Vulcan.”
Jon sighed, "Callie, I don't know what you remember of him from the Academy but he's creepy." Jon nodded to Shran, "Nothing will give me more pleasure sir. Trust me sir, we will."
Sam finally had finished with the surgery and moved the newly mended Eislyn to the main sickbay ward to recover. She cleaned up and headed over to her office which currently had a number of people on it. Looking a little haggard she entered and grabbed a coffee from the replicator, sipping the bitter eliquor and relishing the energy it gave her.
" Eislyn should make a full recovery - she'll be off her feet for a day or so though" She directed the comment towards the Captain.
“It seems obvious that you snagged something whilst down there or they would not have attacked you. I presume the attack was meant to kill, so some secrets run deep.” Having imparted her wisdom to the group Dex left to tend to the women.
"From a security perspective, I think any away team should be minimal and heavily armed" chimed Ayana.
Shran nodded. "I think our presence has certainly upset something. The away team was a direct target, and I'd say that you may have paid the cost for what happened with the Nausicaan ship. I'm certain these women were with a pretty sum on the slave trade. I'd bet they were bound for Orion space." Shran looked at Callie and Jon, "I think it best for us to do as Ayana suggests. I don't want anyone put in more danger than necessary. Callie, you remain on the ship. This T'Vall can see a friendly face when he arrives here and not before." Shran considered something before speaking more, "Jon, don't let him give you a runaround. You have my permission to stun him if need be to get him up here."
"Ayana and I will go and get T'vall and trust me nothing would give me greater pleasure than to stun him into next week." Jon finished smiling wickedly.
Shran gave a reciprocating smile in Jon's direction regarding his comment. He looked to Samantha, "With Eislyn down until tomorrow, Callie will be forced to do more than perhaps medically she should with all of these patients. Is there anything you or Dex might need?"
