Mission: Tal Shiar
Location: Tal Shiar Base

OOC - contains some nudity - not graphic.

"I confess I have not." Mr. Labcoat answered. He was impressed with how quickly the human female had gotten a grasp of the problem. She seemed quite astute in medical knowledge and not being able to use her hands seemed to be an annoyance and nothing more.

" I need a cellular scanner, as a serum collection from Mr Frothy over here" We may be able to use what his body is already doing to try and fight the virus and turn it into a workable solution. Then compare is to the antibodies my body is using. We should be able to synthesis something that may work. " Sam explained, glancing towards Jon and Lisa to make sure they were still ok propped up over against the wall. If she could get Mr Labcoat to trust her and release her hands, then they'd have half a chance.

Mr. Labcoat nodded, "Yes, yes. We can do that." Hr said excitedly as he scrambled about to get the required medical equipment. "This just might work." He told her.

The serum was collected from Mt Frothy and loaded into the microscope. Sam regarded the detail the machine processed and projected onto the screen so they both could see.

" Now, take a sample from me...either I'm completely asymptomatic or my body is fighting the infection better than his" Sam mused, she still felt more or less fine. Achey from being on her feet for hours on end, but otherwise relatively ok. " Better still, release my hands and I can work 10 times more efficiently."

"Absolutely not. You agreed to remain nude and bound remember?" Mr. Labcoat said firmly. "Do the best you can. Turn your back to the computer and use or hands that way."" He said arrogantly as he took a sample from Sam. "We'll soon find out."

At least let me have my hands in front of me. I don't care if the shackles are on" Sam countered. " You want this cure - I need my hands. You're on a timeframe and I'm your ticket to not have you're throat cut - or die from this virus before Straith can cut it"

"That is an excellent point." He agreed and moved behind Sam and released her hands from behind her and then quickly brought them in front of her and rebinding them...securely.

" Thank you" Sam replied gratefully. At least this way she could manipulate the equipment to her own specifications a lot quicker than trying to explain it to someone else. She compared the two serum samples and drew a number of comparisons.

" Human's have a number of dormant genes passed on through generations for immunity to most common illnesses. Many of these are redundant but it appears my body is using this particular gene to fight the virus" She pointed to the monitor. " I will need to verify this information by collecting more samples from the rest of my team - and from you"

"I see." Mr. Labcoat replied but really didn't. "Do what you need to do to get the information you need. Get your samples from your team and from me. Time is short." He noted.

Mr Frothy began to convulse on the chair, gasping for air before hitting the ground with a thud. Sam moved over and rolled him onto his back - taking some readings before pronouncing this obvious.

" He's dead, that clock ticking just got a little louder" Sam said sagely, heading over to Jon.

" I need to take a sample of serum, it won't hurt but it will confirm a theory for me" She requested.

"Do what you need to do Sam. I trust you completely." Jon told her. As he waited for her to take a sample. He hoped she was correct in her theory. He didn't relish the idea of dying nude and bound.

" This is the gene, it's common in the three of us yet missing in your genetic structure. If I have a full lab I'd be able to synthesize something fairly easily that would splice this into your genetic structure..." Sam's voice trailed off. " You don't have a full lab do you?"

"Not here no. There is one in the East Wing but you could never get in. It's keyed to Romulan DNA. Tell me what needs to be done. I can do it." Mr. Labcoat told her.

It's not that easy, I can't just explain how to create a synthetic gene and splice it into existing DNA" Sam rolled her eyes knowing it would probably cost her dearly. "look, if you can synthesize this gene here, no THIS one, then I can do the rest here. It'll just take a little longer." Sam replied, making sure he understood exactly which gene she was talking about. She still didn't trust him.

He looked at the gene Sam wanted to synthesize. "I can do that." He told her confidently. "Do not worry. Let me get to work."

*An hour later* I have the gene you wanted to synthesize. What else do we need to do?"

"Give it here" Sam instructed and reachreached out to take the vial. She'd set up the equipment she needed to splice the DNA, it would require several additional steps due to the rudimentary equipment but it was definately possible. "We need to isolate the relevant strand within Romulans DNA, then splice this gene in, then test it."

He handed her the vial. They were close to having a vaccine. "We must hurry." He told her stating the obvious as he watched Sam get to work on splicing the DNA. It was just a matter of time now.

Two more Romulans had been brought in, both seriously unwell and both desperate for a cure. Sam worked quickly and efficiently with the equipment she had, it would still take an hour or so of careful genetic slicing before they had a workable trial, but they were definately close.

"This is not something I can hurry, unless you want tendrils coming out of your nose" Sam retorted, her ire flaring at the constant pressure.

Mr. Labcoat nodded and then blanched as two more Romulans were brought in, both seriously ill. The virus definitely affected the Romulans quicker than the away team. He glanced at Sam as she worked on the vaccine, hoping she had one before too many other Romulans were infected, himself included.

For once Sam was quiet, her entire attention focused on the task in front of her. Enemy or not she was a doctor and was compelled to help all who needed it. Sometimes to a fault. A terrible thought crossed her mind, what would happen to them once she found a viable cure? Would the away team be killed?

She paused with this thought, hands drilled on the final stage of the cure, replication of the newly splice genetic material.

"Promise me you won't kill them when I finish this?" She requested cautiously.

He looked at her as if studying here. "I give you my word as a doctor. I will not kill you or your companions." He finished sincerely.

He watched her work. Her cuffed hands didn't seem to be too much of a hinderance to her. She was single minded to the task before her. Not even being nude detoured her from the task.

The two Romulan's recently brought in sadly died before Sam finished working on the serum, standing she placed her hands in the small of her back and stretched her aching muscles. She was tired, once again hungry, and sick of being cold and tied up.

" Ok it's done, I need someone to test it on." She admitted, holding up the Romulan equivalent of a hypospray. "There's no point testing it on my team, I engineered this for the Romulan genome specifically"

He smiled inwardly, her saying she designed it specifically for Romulans was music to his ears. "Try it on the two that were both brought in. We will be able to see if it works or not." He suggested.

There was now a small collection of ill Romulans, some fairing better than others - 3 dead so far. Sam approached two of the more critical cases and paused.

"This is a trial - I need to test it before we can distribute it further. Do you understand?" She asked, her kindness something the Romulans would not have been used to.

Some couldn't talk, all they could do was nod. However a look of gratitude was in their eyes at Sam's concern. Something they definitely were not useused to. So they waited for Sam to inject them with the vaccine.

She tried two of the sicker Romulans, injecting them in the corotidcarotid artery where the serum would be distributed through their body the fastest.

"Hand me a medical scanner" She requested, and one was pushed into her hand. The serum was beginning to work, the antibodies binding to the virus cells and rendering them inert. It would take some time for the serum to be completely effective but the illness would not progress any further.

"This looks promising "She admitted, silently proud of herself for coming up with a solution in such trying circumstances. Now she only hoped the Romulans would keep up to their side of the barginbargain.

Mr. Labcoat looked at the scanner, the human was right! There was definite improvement in the Romulans she had injected with the vaccine. "It certainly does." He agreed. "The Empire as well as myself are indebted to you." He looked down for a moment his hand going to his waistband where he pulled out a small and deadly looking disruptor. "Which is why I am sorry to do this. Give me your hands." He ordered.

Sam was shocked, and took a step backwards, stumbling over the leg of a dead Romulan and tumbling to the floor. Without her hands fully free she hit the deck hard. There was going to be some bruises when this was over but nothing thankfully seemed broken.

"You promised...."She stammered.

He nodded a cruel smile on his face. "I promised not to kill you and I'm not." He replied as he pulled her to her feet. His free hand holding her cuffed ones. He had what looked like a silver pen and he pressed it. A tiny click could be heard and Sam's hands were free but only for an instant. He took her hands and pulled them roughly behind her back and clicked the pen and she was once again securely bound with her hands behind her back. "That is much better." He oozed smarmily. "Don't bother struggling." He looked around, "Something's missing...." He muttered.
