Getting Assessments

Mission:
Training Cruise
Location: USS Washington
Shran materialized on the transporter pad after spending time on Andoria with his family. Now that he had returned, they had work that needed to be done. As he exited the transporter room, he hit his comm badge, =^=Shran to bridge. Put us on course for Earth, warp 5. =^= He made his way to the turbolift to visit different department heads, wanting to speak with them individually.
Entering Engineering he found Aidan ordering about his people in what he assumed was an Irish manner. "Jaysus...I said I wanted this engine running perfectly. And you all have bolloxed it up. Now I want the flow regulators fixed properly, and I want the core realigned, and if I have to tell the captain he can't go to warp, I'm going to show you what a warp core breach is really like." As the engineers scrambled Aidan turned around to see the captain standing patiently with an odd smile on his face. "Ah, captain, not to worry, everything under control down here."
"Certainly sounds that way" Shran replied with a wry smile. "I actually came to get your input regarding Cadet Chekov."
"Ah. Yes sir. Well, he is an excellent engineer. Just needs his seasoning like anyone else. I suspect he'll be running an engine room within three years" Aidan replied.
"So you feel he meets or exceeds expectations?" Shran questioned.
"Aye sir. Exceeds in most cases, meets with things like experience" Aidan responded.
"Very good. I'll let you get back to keeping my ship running. And lieutenant, I said I wanted us at warp speed, and I meant it" Shran said as he turned and made his way out. He could hear Aidan cursing in Gaelic as he left and made his way to his next destination.
A few minutes later he was entering Callie's office to speak with her. "Been a while since I have been down here. Hope things are well" he said as he took a seat. "Not going to take up too much of your time. Just wanted to get your assessment on Cadet Freud."
Callie offered a warm smile. “From what I’ve seen of her so far she’s level headed, dedicated to her work, and hard working. She has a minor problem with dealing with children but that’s not going to get in her way.”
Shran nodded. "I can understand that evaluating medical students is a bit different than it would be normal officers, or cadets as this happens to concern. But you are pleased with how she handled any patients the two of you met with?"
“Very happy” Callie nodded. “She has it in her to be a very good therapist.”
"Good. Hopefully Sam and Shon say the same thing. They are my next stop. Thank you for your professionalism, Callie." Shran stood up, "I'll let you get back to seeing patients." With that he left, heading off to sickbay to meet with Sam & Shon. Arriving in sickbay he saw Sam & Shon in Sam's office drinking what he presumed was coffee. "I thought this is how you had your little medical hiccup."
"Captain, good to see you back." Shon smiled with genuine happiness to see him as she saluted him with her coffee. "A little coffee helps oil the wheels as we were just discussing our cadets." She looked at Sam.
Shran smiled. "Still talking about them? I hope that is a good omen for them. They are actually why I am here. Wanted to get your thoughts on them. The two you were working with specifically, especially Viviana, as she will be assigned to the Washington upon her graduation."
"It was most definitely an interesting assessment of many skills" Sam started, taking a sip of coffee. "I found all of them were more than adequate in explicit diagnosis, however the added complications of physiological and psychological issues seemed to trip them up a little. Their bedside manner needs work, but that will come with time. They need rounding in general"
"Callie said the same thing about her pupil. I think that sort of thing is learned on the job" Shran replied. "As long as they are easier to deal with than the EMH Mark 1. You remember how temperamental that was. The Mark 2 wasn't any better, being so neurotic, and the Mark 3 was also a disaster. They seem to finally have gotten it right with the Mark 4. So, you are saying they are at least that competent" he said with an inquisitive look and a slight grin.
"They are indeed competent. Washington worthy? We'll see how they scrub up in a fee months of standard duty rotations. They'll be fine " Sam smiled wryly, knowing the high standards she kept for herself and her team.
Shran offered a wry grin. "I'll talk with you more later. We should be back to Earth in about 8 hours to drop the little one's off, and then, who knows where Command sends us next. We can guess we won't be getting more shore leave any time soon." With that the Andorian turned and exited, leaving the two doctors to their coffee.
Shran next made his way to check in with Kate. Evaluating intel officers was a difficult job, and even more so he thought for Kate who was still young herself. It would be interesting to see what she had to say. He entered the Intel office and was instantly hit with a water balloon to the chest. A look of annoyance instantly came over his face as he looked for the culprit, as well as Kate. "What the hell is going on down here?" he questioned loudly.
Kate stood next to the Bolian cadet. Kate imagined she was looking more shocked than she at the moment because Kate couldn't help but grin at the progress that she had gotten to with the cadet; from stern and eager to please, to relaxed and able to learn.
"Sorry about that, Captain. We were playing water-balloon study guide. We each answer questions from some of her academy tests, and if we get the question wrong, we have to dodge an incoming water-missile! I got one wrong." Kate said. She then raised an eyebrow, "... why are we going over medical stuff, anyway?" She asked the cadet. "I can't tell the difference between a ganglionic fiber and a preganglionic nerve... That's medical stuff!" She said to the cadet. She then turned to Shran. "... I'm just glad we aren't doctors."
"I think we all are glad for that lieutenant" Shran replied in a deadpan reply. "Disappear cadet. I need to speak with the lieutenant."
"Aye sir" cadet Haro replied before bolting out the door.
"Well, despite this water balloon incident, which I am going to pretend didn't happen, how would you assess the cadet?" he questioned.
"She's all business and no play," Kate tried to put her hands into her pockets and shifted nervously on her feet as she realized she had no pockets despite a year of wearing the uniform. She resorted to holding her hands on her hips Janeway style. "... but she's got great attention to detail and be careful giving her details because she'll gnaw on the like a dog with a bone. I guess that makes her perfect for the job," Kate said. "But still -- isn't it weird that a Bolian of all people, would be so -- reserved?" Kate shook her head for emphasis. "Usually, Bolians would recommend a menage a trois on the holodeck for relaxation but this girl -- It took me this long just to get her to toss a Water Balloon at her commanding officer. She must have been toilet trained at phaser point as a child. It's the only conclusion." Kate nodded. "She's good... She'll take some getting used to, but she'll be good in this department or even security."
Shran nodded his understanding. "Well, that was quite a bit more graphic than I expected, but that is my fault. Don't ask a question if you don't want an answer" he said with a smile. "Very well lieutenant, you can resume your little training session, assuming you can find whatever rock your cadet scurried under to hide." Shran turned and made his way out and to the bridge; he had three people he wished to still talk to, and he was mulling it over if he should discuss things with Inara. She seemed rather ensconced with a project last he spoke with her.
Arriving on the bridge he saw the three officers he still needed to speak with all at duty stations. He made his way down moving towards his ready room. "Jon, Deanna, Imik, I'd like a moment with you all. Have Ayana take over temporarily" he said as he continued into his ready room, waiting for the three officers to join him.
Deanna got up from her station and directed Cadet Kuzma to replace her. She began to slowly make her way towards the meeting, trying to wait for Jon and Imik.
"Yes sir. Absolutely." Jon replied having an inkling to what the captain wanted to speak to the three of them about. Jon rose from the center seat so Ayana could take over and followed Deanna.
Shran waited for the trio to enter, Jon and Deanna first and Imik just behind them. "Been quite the training cruise. How have your cadets been holding up?"
"Honestly, I would very much like having Cadet Kuzma aboard the ship upon her graduation. She will be an excellent operations officer while she makes her way up the ranks. My Vulcan T'Pol is everything you would expect from a Vulcan officer, and I think she'll do well working in the sciences. Cadet Belor is feisty. Very competent, but she still has that Cardassian chip on her shoulder that she needs to get past."
Jon listened to Deanna as she gave her report on the cadets she observed. It was concise, to the point and full of praise for the cadets all while also pointing out areas that needed improvement. As Deanna finished and Imik hung back, he spoke. "Cadet Farek has impressive skills to be sure, he also has the habit of wanting to anticipate what the order is. it hasn't come to anything serious, but it could and L'Rissa has had to remind him a few times to wait for the order before replying."
"Unsurprising. Ferengi treat everything like a business transaction. I'm sure he is desperate to impress you and probably has spent time sucking up to you. As long as he hasn't attempted to bribe anyone while aboard, I think he sounds fairly solid" Shran replied.
Deanna couldn't help but offer a soft chuckle as she mumbled, "Ferengi."
"For sure sir." Jon replied with a smile. "I think he was taking bets on if he could perform certain maneuvers... all in the holodeck of course." he nodded at Deanna's mumbled comment. "Quite right Deanna."
Shran looked to Imik. "I know you spent time aboard your own vessel and away from your cadets here, but I would like your assessment of how Krim and Sitak have done."
Jon glanced over at Imik and he knew body language, especially Onjas body language from being around Sachzny for so long and he knew that Imik was angry. He would talk to her later and treat her to a chocolate milkshake.
Imik simply nodded and remained silent. Her thoughts were jumbled and angry, but her training made it impossible for her to articulate this unless asked directly. She then looked around and shifted her feet, "From what I have heard, both have performed well in their duties." Her voice was flat, a poor attempt at hiding her true feelings.
Shran knew that Imik was still upset about how things had turned out in the tactical exercise. He wasn't going to press the matter though. She had superior tech in certain situations, and he knew Deanna could've used her knowledge of Ojnas tactics against her, and he had kept quiet his surprise of the SEOJ team. He simply nodded. "Very well. It seems like the cadets have all performed well. They will be disembarking when we arrive back at Earth. Feel free to keep them working though until then. Dismissed." As the officers moved to exit, he spoke again, "Jon, Deanna, a moment."
He waited for Imik to exit. "Deanna, if you feel that strongly regarding Kuzma, I'll request her assignment upon graduation to be here. Jon already has been informed that Cadet del Rio will be remaining aboard moving forward as she graduates in 3 weeks. She is going to make a good addition to Sam's medical team."
Deanna nodded. "I would actually enjoy having her aboard our ship. Another young operations officer who is more than qualified would be helpful."
Shran looked to Jon, "I hope you plan on trying to smooth things over with Imik. I know she is still upset over how things went, though I am happy our cadets were victorious."
"I do sir. I'm reasonably sure that she will talk to me and any lingering anger can be dealt with. She is a lot like Sachzny." He observed.
Shran nodded. "I agree. Partly why I am a bit nervous about how she is going to deal with the results of the training exercise. We'll be back at Earth in a few hours. Keep an eye on everyone until then. I'm sure Deanna will be happy to help."
"Always" Deanna said with a smile.
"Absolutely sir. She is going to take the results hard, blame herself for the failure of the Onjas to emerge victorious. I can use the help Deanna," Jon replied with a smile of his own.
"Then let's get back to work" Shran stated firmly.
